Tips for Finding Evidence-Based Research

For Nursing & Medical Research, the main databases that will have the best possibility of finding desired material are: CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycInfo. For the best results, here are some tips on finding and accessing Evidence-Based Research on each database:

CINAHL Ultimate:

  1. Under Search articles, books, journals & more, look at SEARCH OPTIONS in case you want to specify one of the options.
  2. Under FILTERS, check such filters as "Peer-reviewed", "Evidence-Based Practice", "Publication Date," etc.
  3. From your search results screen, you can further refine under FILTERS by SUBJECT to further limit your results.

Web of Science:

  1. In the search-bar, use the word “study” as an additional search term, or “randomized control* trial”.
    • *sometimes it will be stated as “random” and other times as “randomized”, thus you can truncate random* with the asterisk, as this will retrieve both the terms random and randomized.
  2. You can also use the term “clinical trial” or other type of study, as a search term to get specific types of EBP studies. You can also use “evidence” or “quantitative,” etc.

PsycInfo:

  1. On the Advanced Search page, scroll down to the "Methodology" box.
  2. Locate "Empirical Study" and check the box to the left, and/or limit the search to other items in the "Methodology" box.

Find articles, evidence summaries, clinical-decision support resources (Databases, etc.)

Use one of these indexes or databases to find specific articles in a variety of nursing journals. You will be asked for a username and password if you are accessing these resources from off campus - just use your NetID and password. To see all the databases available to you, go to our Articles & Research Databases page from the FIND link on the library home page.
