Landscape Architecture & Design Research Guide

The goal of this searchable, easy-to-navigate database is to raise public awareness of the rich diversity and interconnectedness of our shared designed landscape heritage. Spanning over two centuries of American landscape design, the What’s Out There database is searchable by landscape name, locale, designer, type, and style.

This collection of approximately 2,800 lantern slides represents an historical view of American buildings and landscapes built during the period 1850-1920. It represents the work of Harvard faculty, such as Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., Bremer W. Pond, and James Sturgis Pray, as well as that of prominent landscape architects throughout the country.

The HDP includes the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS).

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

The Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation is an inter-disciplinary professional organization which provides a forum for communication and exchange of information among its members. It is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of historic landscapes in all their variety, from formal gardens and public parks to rural expanses.

The images in this web site accompany the lectures in Kenneth Helphand's course on The History of Landscape Architecture - Art History 477/577 and 478/578. This bulletin is intended to guide Federal agencies, State Preservation Offices, Certified Local Governments, preservation professionals, and interested individuals in identifying, evaluating, and nominating designed historic landscapes to the National Register of Historic Places. Particular emphasis has been placed on providing guidance for the successful preparation of nominations for designed historic landscapes.

The Historic Landscape Institute will offer students an introduction to the fields of landscape history, garden restoration, and historical horticulture by using the landscapes designed by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello and the University of Virginia as case studies and outdoor classrooms.
