Resources for High School Students

This guide was designed to help high school students find and use MSU Libraries' resources for their research projects.

Visitor access to information resources

Books/videos/etc? All library materials can be used while you are in the library. Viewing stations for dvd's are available on first floor adjacent to the video collection. If you are over 16 years old and a resident of Montana, you can get a Montana Resident Courtesy Borrower's Card at the Borrow desk and check out items.

Electronic resources? You will find e-books while searching the library catalog and e-journal articles using our indexes and databases.  You can access these while in the library on our public computers or your own laptop using guest access to the wireless network.  However, you will not be able to access these from off campus.

Archives and Special Collections? Unique primary sources that you won't find anywhere else.

Library technology options for visitors

Computers? the library has many public computers, mostly on 1st floor. You can use them all you want but keep in mind that they are used a lot, especially at busy times during a semester.  The best times to find computers available during the semester are Mondays through Fridays from  7 am to 9 am, Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, or Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm.  Information about the visitor login is provided on the public computers' monitors.

Software? in addition to Web browsers, the public computers have Microsoft Office applications available.

Wireless? guest access to the campus network is available (look for "MSU guest").

Printing? the cost for black and white printing is 3¢ a page or 5¢ a double-sided sheet and 50¢ a page for color.  You can buy a $5 vending card at the Circulation Desk ($4.25 of printing + 75¢ for the card - you can add money to the card at any time). To print: send your print jobs to the print stations on 1st or 2nd floor, note the number of your computer, swipe your card, and select your job.  For color printing, select the color printer from the print window's drop-down menu.  The color printer is on the 1st floor.

Cash printing - if you don't want to buy a print card or won't be printing enough to justify buying one, just send your job and pick it up at the Borrow desk (print release station is at the end of the counter closest to the doors). Cost is 5¢ a side.

Photocopiers? there are copiers in the basement and on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors .Cost is $0.03 per page or $0.05 per sheet when printed double sided. There are also two overhead scanners (the KIC machines) on first floor that let you email your scanned documents.

Scanning? scanners are available on 1st and 4th floors.
